1. exasperated: 火大、生氣 (卻束手無策)
deadening effect:減弱作用
I heard people everywhere saying how exasperated they are by the deadening effects of testing and standardization.

2. voracious: 食量很大、如飢似渴的(譬喻)
Young children have a voracious appetite for learning. (很大的求知欲望)

3. dull: 鈍掉、變小
For too many, the appetite starts to dull as they go through school

4. fable: 寓言
captivate: 吸引、使著迷
Some are part of the larger culture we belong to- the myths, fables, and fairy tales about our ways of life that have captivated people for generations.

5. contested: 受質疑的觀念、受反駁的
"Education" is an example of what the philosopher Walter called an "essentially contested concept."
