人人追求在矽谷裡出人頭地，在事業上崇高的成就。追求高水準的表現對在學的學生們造成莫大的壓力。要求樣樣好，成績體育才藝都不能少的全能表現，對學生又有多大的幫助?

矛頭先指向家長，嘴巴上和小孩說一切都是為了未來的幸福快樂，回過頭又馬上問今天數學成績考得如何? 矛盾要求的背後，仍然告訴孩子追求第一才是上上策。孩子們也開始覺得，考不上某某大學以後只能去速食店打工。這就踏上追求校園卓越的不歸路，開始半夜挑燈苦讀，積極參與課外活動。另一方面，父母們也通常忙於工作，戰戰兢兢沒法挪出多的時間陪伴孩子。

競爭的文化同時折磨家長和小孩雙方，文裡用「毫無生活的死屍」形容在競爭社會生活的人們。背後的壓力也引發身體上的不適、心態的扭曲，或是導致自殺事件的發生。優越人才的社群聚集，帶來了工作機會、商機，一方面同時拉高了當地房價物價。一心踏進優越社群，所要付出的代價，除了緊縮的時間，還有更高的生活費、房租，競爭的迴圈於是永無止境循環。若把所有支出付出都看成投資，小孩或父母所得到的報酬又是什麼? 每個人扮演的腳色環環相扣，誰又在其中獲得什麼?

學校教育當然也在其中一環，孩子上學似乎只為了考進更好的學校，進入明星大學為自己的職涯先取得一張高級座位的入場卷。但教育的本意應該磨練學生學習的能力、教導如何思考、怎麼在團體生活共處和合作。培養好奇心、發揮想像力、嘗試探索。「沒有XX大學的文憑，我的小孩以後找得到工作嗎?」一個問句就敲碎所有烏托邦的理想。因為企業也在競爭文化裡的一環，茫茫人海中，能夠快速篩選人才的方法，也只有文憑了，即便文憑也不能百分百保證什麼。

追求至高的卓越，讓一般的成就顯得理所當然，學習中應當得到的成就感也大打折扣。一味追求紙上成績，似乎對創意力有害，而那些有影響力的企業，反而需要創造力，提供顛覆想像的服務。競爭的文化似乎對誰都沒有好處。

這樣的循環是如此堅固，卓越的表現和適時的放鬆又該如何權衡? 呼籲減少功課量、提出研究證實放鬆玩樂帶來健康的心態和觀點，這些措施在現實社會中，如此無力又不切實際。在矽谷─創新力量的聚集地─ 我們可以做出什麼改變?

看完這篇文章，才知道原來美國的學生和台灣一樣，競爭和壓力的程度越演越烈。追求多才多藝，各方面都有優秀的表現，顯然有點病態。關於壓力，也不能完全處在無憂無慮的狀態，畢竟壓力逼著我們成長。比起減少壓力，更應該學處理壓力和釋放壓力。壓力和樂趣也許不完全抵斥，那些從事自己興趣維生的人，何嘗沒感受到壓力呢? 恐怕因為冒著更大的風險，而承受更不一樣的壓力。

壓力的問題就會來到，沒有目的性地承受壓力，人人都說要有好成績，但好成績是一種要求，卻不一定是孩子想要的。這樣的壓力就很難找到出口，不停追趕別人的要求，同樣的壓力就會一再的出現。

那要怎麼解決呢? 這坑似乎已經陷了好深好深。除非每一個環節的人，學生、家長、老師、雇主都同時意識到太多人都在盲目的競爭，且沒有人會獲利，如果自己都不知道為了什麼而競爭。只有大家提醒大家，才有辦法一起走出泥沼。
