[Monday Motto]

[Writing]

This allow school to get to work on a productive long-term plan ─ a plan that had to break the habits that had become ingrained in the school's culture

2. abated: 減弱
When Laurie finally got him to see that she agreed that athletics were the most important thing in his life, the discipline problems abated.

The typhoon has started to abate.

3. mandate:
You can get anyone to do you a favor. You can't get groups follow a mandate

4. scrutinize:
These days, governments scrutinize each other's education systems as earnestly as their defense policies

[Tips]

Instead of following your passion, find a career that changes people’s lives

Follow your passion! Follow your heart!

Passion isn’t something lying dormant deep inside you that enough introspection can figure out. Rather, passion develops as the result of contributing to something meaningful.

[Speaking]

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted more than 1,000 points

plunge(v. or n.): 也常用來形容大幅快速的下降,原意是往某個地方掉下去,例如: 跳到海裡 plunge into the sea; 掉到懸崖 plunge over the cliff;

[Video]

1. Buffalo buffalo (that) Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

Buffalo

Buffalo buffalo A  (that) Buffalo buffalo B buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo C.

Kids that gangsters buffalo bully their classmate.

2.  A ship-shipping ship ships shipping-ships.

Ethos from the speakers:
humor

candid analogy and story as example
powerful and witty quotes as opening and ending
words an

Flow of this talk:
Opening
from DVD to online
million views
continue from last talk

Crisis of human resources
Define phenomenon:
(opening/ analogy) from Al Gol's climate issues to crisis of human resources
define: we make very poor use of our talent
example 1- children feel no/ cannot find talent
Key problem to this crisis: education
(opening) philosopher- dividing the world into two groups
people who wait for weekends and people who work for their belief
education is the explanation of it
explain the malfunction of education- dislocate people
reform the education is not enough
Innovation is hard, because of common sense:
(opening)Lincon's quote
from disentralled to innovation because we take for granted
example 1- wrist watch

Problems in education
linearity (definition)
should be organic (Ex: TED talks speakers)
linear to college
example of firefighters (diversity)
example 2 colleges begin at kindergarten
example 3 three is not half of six year old
conformity
analogy of fast food
(people is different not standardized)
guitar and book writing(passion)

Solutions in education
changing the metaphor from manufacturing to agriculture
create conditions where kids can flourish.

Ending with a poem

Words to take away:
1. 提起: speak of
Very many people go through their whole lives having no real sense of what their talents may be, or if they have any to speak of
Jeremy Bentham, the great utilitarian philosopher
3. 繼續做事(工作): get on with it
They simply go through their lives getting on with it.  They endure it rather than enjoy it, and wait for the weekend.

"As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country."
10. 催眠: hypnotize
But our minds are still hypnotized by them, and we have to disenthrall ourselves of some of them.

Everybody who's spoken at TED has told us implicitly, or sometimes explicitly, a different story: that life is not linear.
We create our lives symbiotically as we explore our talents in relation to the circumstances they help to create for us
But, you know, we have become obsessed with this linear narrative. And probably the pinnacle for education is getting you to college.
16. 單一的: singular
human communities depend upon a diversity of talent, not a singular conception of ability
At the heart of the challenge is to reconstitute our sense of ability and of intelligence.

If you're doing something that doesn't resonate with your spirit, five minutes feels like an hour.

I was very struck by Natalie Merchant's songs last night, recovering old poems.
23. 哀嘆: bewail
he was bewailing the fact that he couldn't really give her what he thought she wanted from him

[Video]

[Video]

[Book note]

Civilization is a race between catastrophe and education.
