"Introduction to public speaking"是由美國華盛頓大學在Coursera上面提供的一個免費課程。 前三周在課堂上學怎麼做一個即興演講，學到整個演講的架構(Introduction, main points, conclusion)、架構裡每一個部分要注意的細節(For main points, need support and explanation that links support to main points)，還有整體敘述方式的訣竅(breath, projection, pace, pause, gestures, and movements。) 最終的練習就是選一個主題來做即興演講，練習的過程中一點也不即興，花了一兩小時想我的論點怎麼樣才有力，一開始講都斷斷續續，最後把每個部分都分開來練習，才有辦法錄一段完整的演講。接著又東改西改整整錄了一小時，天黑才作罷。

「英國人聽到美國腔，可能也會覺得很蠢。」Jamila在短短的五分鐘演講裡說了這一句。達到什麼標準才叫做「能言善道(articulate)」，大家普遍認為；發音要標準、用字精闢最好懂很多艱澀的字、文法標準、腔調像外國人一樣(特別是美國人或英國人)，有這些特質所有人都會說You are articulate! 身為一個黑人，Jamila其實對這個讚美感到矛盾，因為在學校、家裡和朋友間，三種不同的情境，他用的字彙卻完全不一樣。以打招呼為例，在學校說"hello"，遇到社區的朋友說"What's goog"，在家裡則是"Whatagwan"。喔對阿，這三種都是英文。 如果拿能言善道來讚美那些很會說標準英文的人，那他的朋友和爸媽，又算什麼，不懂得英文的人嗎? 對Jamila來說，讚美的背後更多是對黑人種族的歧視。英文是一種語言和文化，語言會受到使用的人和背後歷史情境影響。黑人式的美語也反映了歷史裡曾經嚴重剝奪黑人受教育的權益和資源的分配，不堪的情境下，抱著自尊而演變出屬於他們的語言。 Jamila說這並不是要定義，哪種英文才是最標準的，哪種英文又是落後的。而是要為語言的多樣化感到高興，而「能言善道」就不再是文法對不對、用字好不好、發音標不標準，而是你有辦法和不同族群的人溝通，用他們熟悉的英文溝通。對此，Jamila很自豪地說；「I am articulate!」 有時候常看到一些文章，告訴我們英文怎麼說才對，從學習的角度來看，知道正確的說法當然很好。但對口說而言，其實文法真的不是這麼重要，有時候甚至連寫email也是。重要的是，對方懂不懂你想要說什麼，你能不能流暢的表達你的意思。所以下次說英文的時候，可以不用顧慮太多，勇敢的說錯也沒關係，就像外國人說中文，我們頂多覺得怪怪的，那又怎麼樣呢? 還有另一個疑慮，很多國家其實都有各自的英文腔調和用法，有澳洲腔、有印度腔、有Singlish，但Taiwanese English卻是老師拿來嘲笑學生的用詞。因為沒有人真的在使用英文阿，大家都只是「學」而已，語言不使用自然不會發展出自己的特色。 就像台灣北部和南部的國語都可以不一樣了(擦布 VS 擦戶)，英文卻一點感覺都沒有，只有好英文和爛英文，卻沒有台灣英文。如果你也和我一樣喜歡英文，或是想學好英文，就開始使用它吧!!! 希望哪天我們也可以替Taiwanese English感到自豪。嘿嘿
